Amalgams

Dentists have used amalgam fillings for decades. Because of their durability and low cost, these fillings are very durable. They are a good option for molars in the back of the mouth because they are strong and able to withstand the force of chewing. Typically, these fillings are a combination of metals, including silver, tin, copper, and mercury.

If you have ever had a metal filling, you have likely experienced sensitivity to hot or cold for a short period after you received the restoration. Amalgam fillings can expand and contract which puts a lot pressure on tooth structures and could eventually cause fractures, cracks, or even a leaking tooth.

How Can You Tell If A Tooth Is Cracked?

It can be hard for you to tell if a tooth is cracked. If you have pain, you may not be able to tell which tooth hurts or whether the pain is from an upper or a lower tooth. Cracks sometimes are invisible to the eye and may not show up on an x-ray. Sometimes you will not feel any pain or sensation. Your dentist will find it during an exam.

You can share information with your dentist if you have symptoms.

  • The things that can cause tooth pain, such as heat and cold, or sweets, sour, or sticky foods, are:
  • The area where you feel the most pain

Silver Amalgam Fillings

This is a popular filling. Silver amalgam filling contains more than silver -- it is a combination of other minerals, including tin, zinc, copper and mercury. It is a common choice because it is sturdy, long-lasting and less pricey than other options. A normal silver amalgam filling can stand up to 12 years of use. Because it's malleable, dentists love it.

It isn't aesthetically appealing so is not the best option for visible teeth. It can react to temperature fluctuations by expanding and contracting, which could cause the tooth crack. These fluctuations can cause gaps between the tooth and filling, which could lead to food and bacteria as well as the creation of new cavities. The filling material is safe to use despite the controversy over mercury in silver-amalgam.

Angel Care Dental offers a dental filling procedure

The procedure to fill a tooth may differ depending on its size, location and the type. A few small dental fillings are possible with little preparation and don't require any anesthesia. Dental fillings should only take one visit.

First, your dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any existing fillings and creating a stable foundation for the new filling. In one appointment, resin fillings are possible. Dr. Furgurson or White will place the composite resin on the tooth and cure it with a special light.

Porcelain and gold tooth fillings are made in a dental laboratory and cemented into place in our Angel Care Dental office. The procedure usually takes between two and three visits. To protect the tooth between appointments, the dentist might place temporary fillings.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Fillings

Most dental fillings can be used to treat cavities. Cavities are areas of tooth decay that are caused by bacteria. The dentist will remove decayed tooth material and fill the gap with a filling material. This stops the decay from progressing any further, and it also keeps the tooth strong and resistant to damage such as cracks and chips. You may need to have your cavity filled if you notice any of these signs:

  • A dull, constant toothache
  • Sensitivity towards hot and cold drinks and food
  • The appearance of a black or brown spot on the surface of your tooth
  • When you bite down on one tooth, it can cause sharp pain
  • Bad breath that does not go away with brushing

Not all cavities can cause these symptoms. In most cases, the symptoms of cavities don't appear until they are worsening. Regular cleanings and checks with your dentist are recommended. Your dentist can use tools such as x-rays and lasers to detect small, pinhole cavities before they cause any symptoms. Because they pose a greater risk to tooth integrity as they grow in size, it is often better to have cavities filled at this stage.

Other than for cavities, fillings may be necessary. If you chip a tooth, your dentist may recommend a filling to repair the chip. Some patients who grind their teeth eventually wear down their enamel to the point that a dental filling is needed to prevent further damage. Biting your nails and using your teeth to open packages may also cause enamel wear and chips that your dentist would need to fix with a filling.

Common filling materials

Fillings used to be made of metal. Usually, either silver or gold was used. Metal fillings were and are very durable, but many patients do not enjoy how obvious they are in the mouth. Thankfully, there are now tooth-colored options, like composite resin and porcelain, which make fillings much less obvious in patients' mouths. Your dentist can help you decide on the best material for your filling based on the location of the tooth that needs filling, your budget, the size of the cavity, and your personal preferences.

Metal Amalgams

Metal fillings are still the most durable option. Silver fillings last for ten years, while gold fillings last for many decades. Many patients still choose metal fillings for cavities and chips in back molars, since these teeth are not easily seen when they smile. Metal fillings are also the most affordable option in most cases. Today, most are a blend of metals including mercury, silver, and tin.

Composite Resin

Composite resin fillings can be made of a special epoxy material with silica and ceramic to increase strength. You can color them to match your natural tooth color. This makes composite resin fillings a very popular option for areas such as front teeth or other visible parts of the smile.

Your dentist does not have to remove as much tooth material when inserting a composite filling as when inserting a metal filling. For this reason, your dentist is likely to recommend composite fillings for larger cavities. Composite fillings are not as durable as metals. You may need to have your fillings replaced every 10 years or sooner.

Porcelain

Porcelain fillings are also known as inlays. Inlays are more expensive than other filling options but last longer than composite resin ones. Inlays are more commonly used by dentists to treat decayed or worn teeth than they are for filling cavities.

Dental Filling Blacksburg

The best solution for a toothache or other dental problem is a Blacksburg Dental Filling. A root canal may be necessary if this happens.6

Here's a small history lesson. Did you know that fossils of men and women from the Iron Age only had a cavity rate of close to 10%? This is good or bad? Well, if you compare it to our present day cavity rate of almost 50%, we start believing the men and women of the Iron Age were doing something right!

How is this possible when technology has reached its peak? Although technology is great, it can sometimes be too beneficial for our health. Processed foods and sugary candy are most likely the main culprits in such a high cavity rate. Our bodies are not exposed to the starches and sugars that we eat, so bacteria feeds off these foods. In short, this whole process results in acid eating away at the enamel of our teeth, resulting in a cavity, resulting in a dental filling to essentially save your tooth.

How to Prepare for Your Filling appointment

A tooth filling usually takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on how large the cavity is or the severity of any damage. Your dentist might recommend that you have multiple cavities or chips repaired. This will allow you to only have one visit.

When you arrive for your filling appointment, your dentist will begin by applying a numbing gel to a small area on the inside of your cheek. Once the cheek tissue is numb, your dentist will inject a local anesthetic to numb the tooth that needs work. It will take a few minutes for the local anesthetic to take effect, but when it does, your dentist will begin using a high speed drill to wear away any damaged tooth material. You may feel some pressure and vibrations during this phase of the filling process, but you should not feel any pain.

Your dentist will rinse your tooth with fluoride to remove any decayed material. This rinse may have a sour and somewhat unpleasant taste, but it will only be in your mouth briefly. Your dentist might use some gauze or wedges to clean the tooth. Next, the dentist will place the metal amalgam or composite resin in the tooth using a special tool. If resin is used, a UV light will be aimed at the filling in order to cure the material. Then, your dentist will again use the drill to shape the filling.

If you have a porcelain filling or inlay applied to your tooth, your dentist will probably complete the procedure across two appointments. The first visit will involve the preparation of your tooth and the creation of a mold so the lab can create a custom-made porcelain filling. During the second appointment, your filling will be inserted into your tooth. Computer-aided inlay design software is being used by some dentists. If your dentist offers this service, you may be able to have a porcelain filling made and inserted in a single appointment.

Tooth Inlays And Onlays

Sometimes, dental damage or decay may need more than just a filling. If a tooth doesn't need a full dental crown, we can offer an alternative with either an inlay or an onlay. The inlay consists of a small piece of porcelain crafted at a dental lab by an expert ceramist.

The restoration is used to cover the center portion of the tooth. An onlay can also be made from porcelain. However, the dentist may use this option to cover one or more cusps or the top of the tooth. Patients enjoy a conservative approach to dental restoration when compared to a tooth crown.

Porcelain is used because it has the same appearance as enamel. It offers years of strength and stability for your smile.

Silver Amalgam Fillings

Silver amalgam is a traditional filling material. They are made of different metals, including copper, mercury, silver, zinc, and tin. This filling is durable, strong, and cost-effective. This filling can be used for up to 10 years. However, it is rare that we use this type of filling material any more because one, it is not aesthetic, and can discolor teeth, two old amalgams commonly crack teeth, and third, although research shows the material is safe, many people feel very strongly about the contents in the materials. We use these alternatives and are very unlikely to ever use amalgam.

Ask about replacing silver fillings in the mouth, particularly if they have been there for some time. Amalgam fillings in themselves do not necessitate replacement per say, they have been a very successful choice of restorative material for decades.

Why Dental Fillings are Necessary

At Angel Care Dental, we mainly use dental fillings to minimize the impact of tooth decay. When your tooth starts to decay, it exposes more surface area to bacteria, which speeds up the decay process. We can protect your tooth from decay by filling the cavity.

Fillings also help reinforce the tooth. Cavities can weaken teeth and make them more susceptible to chipping and cracking. The tooth's structure is strengthened by filling the gap. This prevents further damage.

We also use dental fillings for minor cosmetic procedures. Our team can quickly fix small cracks or breaks that would otherwise mar a natural smile. Even cosmetic fillings serve a function since they reinforce the tooth and prevent it from cracking further.

How can I prevent cavities?

Most cavities develop as a result of poor oral hygiene and general neglect of tooth health. Your teeth are resilient, but they cannot stay strong against a constant force of sugary drinks and unhealthy snacking. You can prevent cavities and keep your smile beautiful.

  • Reduce your consumption of sweets and starchy snacks and beverages such as soda and juice
  • Chew sugarless gum and drink water after every meal or snack to clear away food particles and promote saliva production
  • Prioritize your six-month dental cleanings so your Van Nuys dentist can remove any tartar buildup from your teeth

Sometimes, even despite your best efforts, you may develop a cavity. You should schedule Van Nuys tooth restorations as soon as you are aware that you have a cavity. Contact our dental office at (604) 597-6711 and our caring clinical staff will take care of you immediately.

Which is the best type of tooth filling?

There is no one-size-fits-all solution in dentistry. Dr. Furgurson will evaluate your condition and recommend the best choice for your situation. Generally speaking, Dr. Furgurson prefers to use "white fillings" made of either composite resin or ceramic material for a natural-looking restoration.

Ceramic/Porcelain Fillings

Ceramic fillings made from porcelain are tooth-colored, more durable to wear and staining than composite ones. This option is usually made outside of your mouth in a dental lab. It can last for up to 15 years. It saves tooth structure because each time we replace a restoration, we need to fully clean out the tooth. A restoration that is replaced less frequently will help keep your tooth in function without requiring more invasive care sooner.

The Purpose Behind Dental Fillings

If you're a teenager or adult, you may have already had at least one filling in a permanent tooth. Have you ever thought about what a filling is and why they are necessary?

Do You Replace Metal Fillings?

In some cases, we may be able to remove an old metal filling and replace it with a more natural-looking "white filling". It is possible to repair a tooth with an inlay or crown.

What is a Cavity?

  • Microscopic pits are the first sign of a cavity. When properly detected at this stage, they can often be healed with homeopathic treatment.
  • Otherwise, bacteria work their way deeper, continuing to erode tooth structure.
  • Eventually, untreated decay reaches nerves and blood supply at the center of the tooth. This can cause a painful abscess and require extraction.
  • Gum recession is when roots are exposed to enamel and can cause decay.
  • A broken tooth is prone to decay as well.

Gold Fillings

Fillings made from gold and copper are also available in other alloys. These fillings are more expensive than other kinds, but they last longer. A gold crown can be last up to 50 years if you are good about your dental health. The only negative of gold is the extra cost for the metal, and the color of the metal near the front of the mouth or in the "smile-zone" would not be most people's first choice!

How Do I Know If I Need Tooth Fillings?

We may recommend composite tooth fillings for a number of reasons, including:

If you experience sudden discomfort, it is possible to need dental fillings. A toothache that persists or becomes sensitive to cold or hot temperatures could indicate decay.

A tooth restoration, such as an inlay or onlay, can be beneficial if you are experiencing discomfort with a broken tooth.

Glass Ionomer/Resin Fillings

Resin fillings are made from a mixture of acrylic and glass. They're highly recommended for fillings below the gumline and in children under five years old. Fluoride is released by glass ionomers, protecting the tooth against future decay. They should be replaced approximately every two to five years.
